Flex System installation — step by step
Step 1: Mount the aluminum heat sink to the roof rails
The foundation of the system is an aluminum heat sink mounted to the factory roof rails of VW California or Mercedes Marco Polo. The panel is permanently attached to this part.
We don’t glue panels directly to the roof and we don’t drill the vehicle’s body. Everything relies on mounting points compliant with the vehicle’s specification. The structure is designed to maintain serviceability and provide adequate panel cooling.
Install time: approx. 20–30 minutes.
Step 2: Mount panels to the heat sink
Panels are permanently fixed to the aluminum support element. Between the panel and the roof surface there’s a ventilation gap that improves cell cooling during operation.
This matters especially in summer — high temperature directly affects panel performance drops and their long-term durability.
Time: approx. 20 minutes.
Step 3: Cable feed-through to the interior
We route the installation through factory cable entry points — without drilling the roof. Depending on the model, we use existing technical pass-throughs and solutions compliant with the vehicle’s design.
Everything stays sealed and consistent with the vehicle manufacturer’s intent.
Time: approx. 30 minutes.
Step 4: MPPT controller and protections
The MPPT controller is mounted near the auxiliary battery. The installation includes appropriate DC protections and wires sized for the system load.

We also use battery voltage and temperature monitoring, which allows the controller to properly transition between charging stages.

Step 5: Configuration and system test
Finally we configure the controller for the specific battery type (AGM or LiFePO4), check charging voltages, operating temperatures and real system performance in the sun.
Each kit is tested after installation.

Most common solar panel installation mistakes
- Drilling the roof without proper sealing — risk of corrosion and warranty issues.
- Gluing panels directly to the metal — weaker cooling and difficult removal.
- No DC protection on the installation side.
- Incorrect MPPT connection order.
- Wires too thin causing voltage drops.
- No battery temperature measurement during heavy charging.
