VW California T5 / T6 / T6.1 with AGM batteries.
Trips of 7–14 days, frequent off-camping stops, higher energy use and occasional 230 V usage.

EcoFlow Delta 3 — the station acts as an extra energy buffer for 230 V devices and offloads the factory AGM during heavier draws.

In practice, surplus solar energy keeps AGMs in better condition and significantly reduces the need to recharge the car from external sources.

How the system works
While parked:
- the panel powers the onboard installation,
- keeps batteries in the correct voltage range,
- surplus energy can flow to EcoFlow.
While driving:
- Alternator Charger charges the power station directly from the alternator,
- energy is recovered much faster than with classic 12 V sockets.
At rest, EcoFlow handles 230 V devices:
- coffee machine,
- water heater,
- bike chargers,
- computer gear,
- additional higher-power devices.

Why does system configuration matter?
In newer VW California T7 models with factory LiFePO4 batteries, the energy management system works differently than in older T5/T6 based on AGMs. That’s why MPPT configuration and the way the system integrates with the vehicle’s installation are tailored individually to the specific car version.
In AGM-based systems we use an external temperature sensor and voltage monitoring, allowing the MPPT controller to properly adjust charging parameters to the battery’s operating conditions.
For LiFePO4 batteries, most modern packs already have a built-in BMS with temperature control and charging protections. In such configurations an additional temperature sensor is usually no longer needed, as the battery electronics take over the protection role.
What should a well-designed system include?
MPPT instead of PWM
An MPPT controller actually increases the amount of recovered energy and copes better with variable weather conditions.
DC protections
Fuses and properly sized wires are mandatory in installations of this class.
Voltage and temperature monitoring
Correct charging has a direct impact on battery longevity and overall system stability.
Panel cooling
Panels are not glued directly to the roof. A ventilation gap and aluminum heat sink improve cell operating conditions and their long-term durability.
No roof modifications
The installation uses factory mounting points and solutions compliant with the vehicle’s design.
